SIA Licence Application + Troubleshooting

How can I apply for a SIA license?

The answer depends on if you’re paying for yourself or if your employer is paying for you? If you are applying as an individual seeking your own SIA licence, you can apply directly on the SIA’s website.

There are 3 steps to the licence application process:-

  1. Create an online account with the SIA at SIA.gov.
  2. Log into your SIA account, click on ‘Process new application’ and answer the questions. Try to be as honest and accurate as you can. Once you’ve completed this stage you will be required to pay a fee.
  3. Following this, you should go to your local Post Office with your ID – your identification will be checked and verified so it’s important that you take the originals documents and not photocopies. The Post office will take your picture using a passport style Photo booth, this is the picture that will appear on your SIA licence.

If your employer is paying for your licence, the procedure differs slightly.

There are 5 steps to the licence application process which must be completed in this specific order:-

  1. Setup your online account with the SIA at SIA.gov.
  2. Your prospective employer will be sent a link to your SIA account, this is usually done by email.
  3. Log into your SIA account, click on ‘Process new application’ and answer the questions. The system will say ‘do not progress’ if a third-party is handling your licence application for you’, ignore this error message and continue with the application.
  4. Following this, you should go to your local Post Office with your ID – your identification will be checked and verified so it’s important that you take the originals documents and not photocopies. The Post office will take your picture using a passport style Photo booth, this is the picture that will appear on your SIA licence.
  5. Your prospective employer/ sponsor will pay for your licence directly to the SIA on your behalf.

Some SIA licensing tips for you:

    • Look out for an email from the SIA when you first set up your SIA account – you will need to accept this before you can proceed. Don’t forget to check your junk box just in case.
    • Prepare your documentation ahead of time and make sure your ID is ready for the verification process at the Post Office.
  • If you have an error message at the end of the licence application process that says ‘no qualification found’ – check the information that you have inputted as it may not match the details that were uploaded by the awarding body.
  • After selecting the license you wish to apply for – you should opt for the ‘Frontline’ SIA license and pick the licensable role you have completed training for i.e. CCTV, Door Supervisor etc.
  • Remember to have cleared funds in your account before purchasing your SIA license, the total cost is £220.  You will be eligible for a 50% discount when purchasing your second (active) SIA licence which costs £110.

Criminal records:

  • The SIA will take note of cautions in the past 3 years and spent convictions in the past 5 years. However every case is different and the SIA assess these matters on a case by case basis.  If you’re not sure either way, complete the SIA criminality checker before you book your SIA course

How long will it take to get my SIA license?

  • Usually the longest it can take is 25 working days. But our learners generally receive their licenses within 2 to 3 weeks. It is best to check the SIA Licence indicator on their website:- checker

  • You can contact the SIA via your personal account – there is a direct email facility available to you or you may prefer to call them on the SIA helpline – The SIA a contact number is 0300 1239298

  1. I just need a bit of information before I apply for sia security guard license. I received custodial sentence of 2 years and 6 months on 04/05/2018 for serious injury by dangerous driving. I’m out now and had no previous convictions or warning on my record. I’m just wondering if I’m eligible for SIA license before I make a payment and apply for it. Thanks Atif
